A few years ago, I was in a nautical bookshop in Southampton when the chap behind the counter recognised me, and asked if I would mind autographing a few books.
It's almost as flattering to be asked to autograph a book as it is to write one, so if course I did.
A few minutes later, out of the corner of my eye, I saw another customer pick up one of "my" books, and walk over to the till. While his credit card was being processed, he flicked open his new purchase.
"Do you mind if I change this one?" he said "Someone seems to have scribbled in it".
