Echopilot 3D Forward Looking SonarEchopilot FLS3D screen
Sonar specialists Echopilot have taken a huge step forward in their development of forward-looking sonar with the introduction of a new three-dimensional system.

Using twin transducers (on a single retractable through-hull fitting) the 3D forward sonar uses the same principles as the well-established vertical-scanning FLS models, except that it scans a horizontal arc of 60 degrees as well as a vertical arc of just over 90 degrees. From the mass of returning echoes, the unit’s central processor collects data about the depth and directions of tens of thousands of individual points on the seabed, then “joins the dots” to produce a 3D representation of what lies up to 200m ahead of the boat, updated roughly once per second, that can be displayed on almost any multifunction display or PC.

The price for the complete system (excluding display) hasn’t been nailed down yet, but it’s likely to be about £5000.
