Tacktick launch
low-cost entry level wireless wind instrument January 2009 ![]() Describing it as a an "entry-level basic wind system", the company says it is ideal for sailing or power cruising yachts of 35ft and under. It uses the same “masthead” unit as the existing MN 100, so it still has a mini solar panel to save having to run a power supply up a mast, and still uses Tacktick’s well-established wireless system to send data down to the display. The display, too, looks almost identical to the existing MN100: it’s a simple quasi-analogue LCD with four push-button controls. The most obvious difference is that the new unit doesn’t have a solar panel, so it has to be hard-wired to a DC supply. The labeling on the controls is different, too, reflecting the fact that many of the more sailing-oriented software features have been stripped out to leave a simple wind speed and direction indicator to help with those tricky berthing manoeuvres and lend credibility to salty stories about “the time we were out in a Force 8….” Perhaps the best feature, though, is that the price has been almost halved, from £700 for the MN100 to £399.95 for the MN30. www.tacktick.com |
